Register for your credit score sooner not later

One small credit step that supports everything else

Credit admin often ends up on the “later” list and the starting point, registering for a credit score, rarely feels urgent. But it quietly affects more decisions than most people realise.

Credit influences what gets approved, how long things take and what costs more over time, even when we are not actively thinking about it.

In this article, we walk through how to register for your credit score and why taking care of one small task can make everything else feel a little steadier.

Why do people procrastinate?

It is human nature. Most people do not register for credit report services out of curiosity.

They tend to prioritise their credit health after a declined application for finance, before a home loan or rental agreement, or after a conversation that starts with, “We will need to check your credit first.”

When they get around to it, what surprises many is how much better it feels knowing what information a finance/credit provider will find on your credit profile.

Seeing your information ahead of time removes some of the uncertainty.

For others, registration plays a protective role. It helps them notice any wrong information or unfamiliar activity linked to their profile early, rather than discovering problems when something goes wrong.

There’s really no reason to procrastinate here. It is a simple thing to get sorted. You see, your credit score and credit report already exist.

They are linked to your South African ID number and sit with registered credit bureaus, who update them over time based on how you use and manage credit.

As a result, registering does not create new information, and it does not mean applying for credit. It just gives you secure access to see what is already there.

That access allows you to view your credit score, check which accounts are listed in your name, and understand what lenders are likely to see when they assess you.

Importantly, checking your own credit information does not harm your credit score.

It is a basic process

At Finance365, we will ask for your South African ID number, a cell number for one-time PIN verification, and basic personal details such as your name and email address.

No documents are asked for upfront and it takes a few uninterrupted minutes on a secure device.

This initial setup also makes ongoing credit score monitoring with us easy, for when you want to keep an eye on changes over time.

Check in with your credit

Once registered, your credit profile becomes something you know about and can log into when you want your latest information, like your credit score.

You can confirm that your personal details are correct, check that listed accounts belong to you, and understand what is influencing your score over time.

While you may only look occasionally, the value lies in knowing the information is there when you need it.

When you look back on it, you see that registering for your credit score is not about adding work to your life. It is a small, steadying habit that supports everything else.

Did you know? You can register with Finance365 for your free credit score and report any number of times in a year.
